Company is seeking a highly experienced Principal Engineer – Solr / Search Architect to lead the architecture, performance optimization, and operational excellence of our enterprise search platforms. This role combines deep technical expertise in Apache Solr, Java, and distributed systems with strategic leadership across engineering and customer-driven initiatives.The ideal candidate will architect scalable search solutions, enhance AI-driven search capabilities, and ensure high availability, reliability, and performance of mission-critical production systems.Key Responsibilities Architecture & Platform Leadership
- Lead engineering and production support for Solr-based search applications.
- Architect next-generation search platforms with scalability, resilience, and performance in mind.
- Review and modernize existing architectures to improve efficiency, cost, and maintainability.
- Drive enhancements in:
- Search ranking & relevance tuning
- Query understanding
- Retrieval effectiveness
Performance & Reliability Engineering
- Diagnose and resolve complex issues across Solr, JVM, Java microservices, and infrastructure layers.
- Perform deep log, metrics, and performance analysis to proactively prevent incidents.
- Optimize:
- Solr indexing strategies
- Schema design
- Query execution
- JVM tuning and memory management
AI-Powered Search Innovation
- Design and implement AI-enhanced search solutions leveraging:
- Vector databases
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) models
- NLP and LLM-based ranking systems
- Track emerging trends and best practices in AI-powered search ecosystems.
Observability & Operations
- Implement monitoring, dashboards, and alerting frameworks.
- Improve system observability using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or ELK.
- Collaborate on:
- Capacity planning
- Scaling strategies
- Disaster recovery and resilience engineering
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor junior engineers and provide architectural guidance.
- Partner with development, DevOps, and business stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement across engineering workflows.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in software development and production support.
- Deep expertise in:
- Apache Solr (indexing, schema design, tuning, distributed architecture)
- Java and Spring Boot
- Microservices architecture
- Strong database experience (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
- Experience designing scalable, distributed search platforms.
- Strong troubleshooting skills in:
- Solr performance
- JVM tuning
- Memory optimization
- Linux/Unix expertise and shell scripting proficiency.
- Hands-on experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, ELK).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Strong analytical thinking and ability to operate in high-pressure production environments.
- Relevant certifications (Solr, Java, or Cloud platforms) preferred.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Preferred / Differentiating Experience
- Hands-on implementation of AI-based search (vector search, embeddings, semantic retrieval).
- Experience integrating Solr with ML pipelines.
